Introducing the Big Science
Competition
Held for the first time in Nigeria,
the Big Science Competition showcases science as an important subject in the
curriculum, vital to a modern Nigeria, and gives students an opportunity to
discover a talent in this area without the pressure of it affecting normal
school assessment. The questions, over time, will provide a rich resource of
scientific questions for classroom discussion.
The principal aim of the Big Science
Competition is not to be a testing service, even though comprehensive reports
will be issued which supply meaningful statistics. Rather the event is intended
to genuinely enrich scientific study at school.
The questions are stimulating and
students who wish to follow a further interest in science can be identified to
take part in more challenging activities of the Nigerian Science Olympiads. The
early identification of scientific talent could, for some students, result in
them ultimately being identified and trained to represent Nigeria at the annual
International Conference of Young Scientists’ and eighteen 18 international
science competition.
The 2007 Nigerian Big Science
Competition will next be held on Thursday 17 May 2007.
The Big Science Competition is the
"scientific child" of our sister organization the Australian Science
Innovations. It will be administered in Nigeria by STILL LEARNING Science
Innovations. It will have an entry fee of N1,200.
STILL LEARNING is best known for
pioneering the Science Olympiads in Nigeria, an innovative and intensive
training program for Nigeria’s best science students. The effectiveness of this
program is evidenced by Nigeria’s performance in international competition,
where it maintains a position amongst the best nations of the world. STILL
LEARNING has prepared Nigeria's teams to the International Science Olympiads in
Physics, Chemistry and Biology for over 6 years.
